Boy, 2, suffers from Children’s Alzheimer’s

A rare genetic disorder has left a two-year-old with a form of dementia, a disease more normally associated with the elderly.

Taylor Smith, from Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria, has been diagnosed with Niemann-Pick Type C, also known as Children’s Alzheimer’s.

The disease means that the toddler is likely to develop signs of dementia before he becomes a teenager, although the symptoms can appear at any time.

Around 600,000 people in the UK have been diagnosed with dementia, of which Alzheimer’s is the most common form of the disease.

A spokesman for the Neimann Pick Disease Group said that the disease was progressive and often meant an extremely limited lifespan for the sufferer.

While hunger was curbed, Dr. Lustig says they kept eating out of stress or habit.

ScienceDaily (Apr. 30, 2008) — Aspirin-like compounds (salicylates) can claim another health benefit: increasing the amount of insulin produced by otherwise healthy obese people. Obesity is associated with insulin resistance, the first step toward type 2 diabetes.

Aspirin and other salicylates are known to reduce blood glucose in diabetic patients. New research accepted for publication in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism reveals a similar beneficial effect among obese individuals by increasing the amount of insulin secreted into the bloodstream.

The researchers found that administration of triflusal led to decreased fasting serum glucose. Contrary to their expectations, insulin sensitivity did not significantly change during the trial. Insulin secretion, however, significantly increased in relation to the dose size.

World map of metabolism finds blood pressure clues

WASHINGTON, Apr. 20, 2008 (Reuters) — Researchers creating a map of human metabolism around the world have found compounds in urine that point to some surprising differences affecting blood pressure, based not on genes but on what people eat and their gut bacteria.

They analyzed urine samples from 4,630 people in the United States, Britain, Japan and China to find some surprising new links to blood pressure differences.

An estimated 1 billion people globally have high blood pressure, defined as a reading of 140/90 or higher. It is a major cause of stroke, heart disease and kidney failure.

One link they found was a compound called formic acid or formate.

"Not much is known about what the role is of formic acid in the body. It's the thing that makes ant stings hurt and bee stings as well," Nicholson said.

"It means maybe if you modulate formate metabolism you can modulate blood pressure," he said.

DASH Dietary Approach In Women Reduces Risk Of Heart Disease

Women who ate foods recommended by a well-known diet for reducing high blood pressure had a lower risk of heart disease and stroke than women whose diets were normal, a new study has found.

Researchers from Simmons College, Boston, followed more than 88,000 healthy women for almost 25 years. The study found that women in the top 20 percent of the DASH score were 24 percent less likely to have heart disease and 18 percent less likely to have a stroke than the women who scored in the bottom 20 percent of the DASH score.

The DASH diet favors fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat milk and plant-based protein over meat. Previous research has shown this kind of diet can help prevent high blood pressure and cholesterol, which both can lead to heart attacks.

Hypertension also contributes to other serious and potentially life-threatening conditions, including heart attack, heart failure and kidney disease.
